Very Old Fashioned Dutch Apple Pie

6 – 8 apples
3 tablespoons lemon juice
Puff pastry
Streusel:
1/3 cup white sugar
¼ cup brown sugar
½ cup + 2 tablespoons plain white flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup butter
½ cup chopped walnuts

Preheat the oven to 190oC. Line a 23 CM pie plate with the puff pastry. Peel, core, and slice apples into a bowl and sprinkle over the lemon juice to prevent the apples from browning.

Mix all the dry ingredients except the chopped walnuts together in a bowl and cut in the butter with pastry blade or knife.  Add the chopped walnuts and mix to combine. Add ½ the mixture to the waiting lemon sprinkled apple slices and mix to coat.

Place the coated apple slices into the prepared pastry lined pie plate and then sprinkle the remaining streusel mixture on top. Cover with aluminium foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove the aluminium foil and bake for a further 20 minutes.

Serve hot warm or cold with either fresh whipped cream, custard or vanilla ice cream.

  1. Nothing is more comforting on a cold winter's night than a hot apple pie and whipped cream. Love this!
